EarthGang vs. the Algorithm: the era explained
A guide to EarthGang's multi-project series about technology and AI, from RIP Human Art to Robophobia, Snakegang, and Perfect Fantasy.
From 2023 to 2024, EarthGang released a connected run of projects under one banner: EarthGang vs. the Algorithm. Here's how the pieces fit.
The idea
The algorithm here means the recommendation systems and AI tools that increasingly decide what we see, hear, and make. The duo's position is that art made to please an algorithm loses something human. WowGr8 described the run as a video game where the algorithm is the final boss.
The releases, in order
- EarthGang vs. The Algorithm: RIP Human Art: September 22, 2023
- ROBOPHOBIA: February 23, 2024, with Snoop Dogg, Spillage Village, and Tommy Newport
- SNAKEGANG with the electronic duo Snakehips: July 19, 2024. This one is a side quest rather than part of the series, but it came out in the middle of it.
- Perfect Fantasy: October 29, 2024, the finale and their first independent album
Some songs from the EPs, such as "Osmosis," "Put in Work," and "Blacklight," were carried onto Perfect Fantasy, so the album works as a summary of the whole era. Read our Perfect Fantasy guide.
It didn't stop at the music
The theme has followed EarthGang beyond the albums. Their 2026 comic, EarthGang and The Wheel of Fate #1, pits the duo against an AI built from humanity's worst impulses. And in September 2026, they spoke at the UN General Assembly about the environmental cost of AI data centers, especially in Africa.
Why it's worth your time
Lots of artists complain about streaming. Few build a two-year concept around it. Whether or not you agree with the duo, the Algorithm era is EarthGang at their most focused.
