EarthGang's Atlanta: the city behind the music

How Atlanta shaped EarthGang, from Mays High School and the Spillage Village house to the legends they build on.

You can't separate EarthGang from Atlanta. The city is in the stories, the sounds, and the people around them.

Southwest Atlanta and Mays High

Olu and WowGr8 grew up in Southwest Atlanta and met as freshmen on a field trip at Benjamin Elijah Mays High School. They formed the group in 2008, while they were still students, and played the city's A3C Festival in 2010 and again in 2013.

A house full of artists

Spillage Village grew out of shared spaces. 6lack once lived at EarthGang's house. In 2020, the collective spent more than two months in an Atlanta studio house making Spilligion, and Dreamville's famous Revenge of the Dreamers III sessions in 2019 took place at Tree Sound Studios in the city.

Building on the legends

Critics often compare EarthGang and Spillage Village to OutKast, Goodie Mob, and the wider Dungeon Family. The duo has leaned into that lineage. CeeLo Green, a Goodie Mob founder, is on Ghetto Gods, and Dungeon Family's Big Rube appears on Spilligion. T-Pain, another Atlanta-area star, is on both Mirrorland and Perfect Fantasy.

Atlanta in the albums

  • Mirrorland reimagines Atlanta as a magical mirror world, inspired by The Wiz.
  • Ghetto Gods is the duo's real-world Atlanta record, about the people who turn themselves into icons.
  • Perfect Fantasy invents "Tokyolanta," the city crossed with Tokyo.

Three albums, three versions of the same city. That might be the best summary of EarthGang there is.
